While on vacation in the Dominican Republic last summer I came across this local distillery that produced Dominican rum. The distillery had free factory tours with samples at the end and there was no way that I was going to pass up that opportunity. The Factory itself was beautiful on the outside with flowers and old barrels of the rum, the tour guide (who was english speaking THANK GOODNESS) started the tour by explaining the history of Brugal and then took us inside to see the process. The factory was very hot but there were a few fans to circulate the air. We saw every step of the process from start to finish and then the tour left off in a gorgeous store/tasting room. We were able to sample all of the different kinds of rum and purchase whatever we wanted for an extremely discounted price. If you plan on visiting the Dominican Republic (Puerto Plata area) you should definitely make time for this excursion since it is close to many of the resorts (only a 5 minute drive for us) . This rum is sold in the US and you may be able to find it in your local liquor store. The rum is smooth and delicious and perfect to make a rum and coke while pretending that you are somewhere tropical.
